Online Colleges in Alabama

The number of distance learners in Alabama is growing over the years, as the state cultivates a convenient means of acquiring college education online through the ACCESS (Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide) Virtual Learning program. This initiative allows students enrolled in an Alabama public school to take classes online toward their degree. Some college courses are only available online, so students wouldn’t be able to access these classes otherwise in a traditional classroom setting.

Alabama is home to 77 college institutions with competitive degree programs. To break it down, the state has 39 public schools, 20 non-profit and 10 for-profit private colleges. College Board indicates that the average in-state tuition and fees for 4-year public colleges was $9,750, while the out-of-state average was $23,370 in the 2015-2016 school year. Alabama attracts many out-of-state students, with approximately 44% taking online classes exclusively. The state has financial aid initiatives such as the Academic Common Market/Electronic Campus and the Regional Contract Program for Health Professions which allow out-of-state students to pursue their degree in an online college in Alabama while paying in-state rates. While the admissions criteria is strict and program selection is limited, these initiatives do provide great learning opportunities for those who qualify.
