There are 44 institutions that award degrees in the state. Tuition rates for in-state students are relatively low, costing $6,350 for the latest academic year 2015-2016. Out-of-state tuition fees come in at $19,410. New Mexico has increased its state spending on education by nearly 6% in recent years. There were $25.1 million need-based grants awarded, and nearly $79.2 million in non-need grants awarded.

These students are primarily in-state, with 84% found to be living in New Mexico. In addition to this program, New Mexico is also a member of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. This department is working to improve the quality of higher education in the state and around the whole region. They’re also establishing new performance goal initiatives for educational institutions in the region, especially amongst STEM fields.
